Bedroom Decorations-Make a Statement!

I always have such a difficult time trying to pick the right decor for a remodeling project, why? It’s really not as difficult as it appears to be. There are just so many wonderful things to choose from that it becomes really hard to decide on what to purchase. I find things I really like, but actually visualizing how it will look is something altogether different.

When deciding on bedroom decorations, there are so many factors to consider. Be sure you have in mind what you want your end result to be. Do you want a more feminine look such as for a daughter’s bedroom, or a more masculine look for your son’s bedroom? Or maybe you are going for a more romantic look for your own bedroom. If it’s a guest bedroom, perhaps you want something of a more neutral nature.

Whatever you choose, keep in mind that it’s your style that makes it personal. If you like bold and bright, then go for it. Some people like soft and cool. But in the end, it’s your choices that will bring the design together.

The Right Stuff

How do you find the right stuff for your style? Well, that is all up to you. You may find just the thing you’re looking for in the most least expected places, like garage sales. Everybody loves a good bargain! And I, for one, have found some really nice stuff for decorating at garage sales, second hand shops, and surplus stores.Garage Sale

If you’re not a garage sale shopper, then there are many alternatives for finding really good bedroom decor that will not cost you a lot of money. There are always really good sales at different stores. I always check on line first to see what is available. If the items I really like is a bit above my budget, I simply check other places, or wait a while to check back to see if it’s on sale. I can tell you, being patient does pay off.

Let’s Take a Look

When I got ready to give my son’s bedroom a new-look, I already had in mind what I was going for. He was about 13 at the time. I didn’t want anything too childish, but not anything too grown up looking either.

He loves the outdoors, as I do. Hunting ducks, deer, hogs, and fishing are his favorite things to occupy his time. Keeping this in mind, I decided to go with different shades of green for his walls. It creates this beautiful design by using two different colors at the same time on a split roller.  For me, bedroom decorations are not only what you hang on the wall, but the whole design in BDgeneral.

It turned out beautiful!! I love the way the green tones blended together to give that “outdoor” feel. I then used the darkest color green from the wall paint and used that to paint the trim work. Awesome!

Make It Personal

Next, comes the really fun part. I had to shop for all the things to make the room feel like his own personal space. I wanted him to feel like he had personally designed his own room.

So with that in mind, I began to shop for things I knew he liked. I wanted something that would be more long term in speaking. Children go through fads about what interests them from time to time, but I knew there were things that would always stay dear to his heart-hunting and fishing. He began hunting when he was very young and, at age 13, still loved it. I felt like this was the right direction to go. Speaking of direction, as a mother, we always want our children to go in the right direction-so I actually had that in mind as well.

Tying It All Together

Once the painting was finished and the wall decor was hung, I focused on what I should do about the bedding and curtains. There were so many colors and designs to choose from. What would really be the perfect match?

BD 1

I didn’t want anything too bold. Although I love bright colors, this was not my room. I had to consider his taste and what he would like to see every day when he walked into his bedroom. I didn’t feel green would work, since I had already painted the walls and trim with that color: too much green. So, I went with gray. The gray comforter set I bought was just perfect to tie everything together. Place a few throw pillows of matching colors-just the right touch. I also found gray curtains to match.

Loving Your Space

As I stood back to look at my creation, I was so very excited about the outcome! I had done it! It had turned out exactly as I had hoped. Everything went together beautifully!

Now for the real test! Would my son like his new space as much as I hoped he would? The answer: YES!

As he walked in and looked at his room, he began to smile when he saw all the hunting decorations I had on the walls. He even commented on how cool the walls looked with the color-meshing technique I had done. Yes, I was one proud mom. I’ve even heard some of his friends comment on how he has such a cool room.

I still have a few minor details to compete to make it complete, but as I have stated, it’s all a work in progress. The main thing to remember is to make sure the bedroom decorations match the person who will be spending all that time in the bedroom. Make sure you know your audience. Never be afraid to try new things.

You can create this same look using The Woolie split roller kit from Amazon. It’s so simple to use and can be used again and again!

Good luck on your purchase, Laurie. Even though our home needed quite a bit of remodeling, we couldn’t be happier. Of course, knowing how much I enjoy DIY home projects, our house was perfect for me. I will be posting more on other rooms in our home soon.

Definitely in designing one’s house or shall we say a room we must consider the taste of that person, not your taste.
Before deciding consult and ask his/her side and try to contrast everything and that’s your skill will work.
If you offer your services ask and listen the customer what he wants before suggesting your own.
The outcome will surely satisfy him. And if the customer is happy he/she will recommend you to his friends. And your customer and income will increase, you get instant advertising ( word of mouth) and that is powerful.

All this is so true. Great points for others to read as well. I’m so glad I know my son as well as I do, or I’m not sure this would have worked out so well.

I like to make my room my own. I loved what you did with your space to make it look so awesome. The painting scheme you came up with is pretty amazing. You should consider doing interior design. That’s how good it looks to me.

Great idea, painting the trim that dark green. I think it is quite striking. I also love the compass on the wall.
It is awesome that you have such a large space to work with. Did the color of the carpet play any role in your color choices?

Many thanks, Irma. I picked the compass for a more personal reason actually. As a mom, I’ve always told my children to never lose their way. I chose the compass for this very reason….so it makes it very dear to my heart.

The bedroom is quite large. When we purchased our home, that is one thing that did stand out was the size of the bedrooms. I loved the fact that they were a very nice size when most houses tend to make the children’s rooms a bit smaller.

Hmmmm….carpet. The carpet never played a factor at all in my choice of colors. I am not a fan of carpet at all. There was carpet in all of the bedrooms as well as down the hall-which I have ripped up (except for in my son’s room-which is going to be ripped up this summer). Actually, it’s hard to see in the pictures, but the carpet is actually blue! It looks more gray in the pictures I think, but it’s blue.

As I stated, it’s all an ongoing process. There’s always another project to do or little finishing touches to take care of from past projects. I will be updating pictures on this post once I get the carpet torn up and the floor finished with some type of finish that will make it even more amazing. Stay tuned. 🙂

I do not know if my last message went through, so I am going to rewrite it for you. I really like your website. The paint technique you di in your son’s bedroom is beautiful. I also loved learn what all the different colors mean. I tried to find pink, but it was not listed. I wish you the best with your website.

I’m sorry you last message did not go through, I’m not sure what happened. This is the first one I have seen from you. Glad you got this one through.

The color pink is associated with sweet, nice, playful, cute, romantic, charming, feminine, and tenderness. Of course, most people associate pink with the female gender, but not so true anymore. I don’t think anyone would want to do their son’s bedroom with pink…..but,to each their own. I’m not here to judge by any means.

As I mentioned, the color meshing technique is one of my favorites. You can pick the colors that speak to you, or in this case, what spoke to my son and his taste. Stop by again soon for more updates.

Thanks so much, Christina. I love to change things up a bit. Some of the techniques I use may not be for everyone, but I think they set themselves apart from the “one color” paint. Glad I could help with some ideas for you.

I like the color-meshing you did. I’ll tuck that info away for future reference when it’s time to update paint. Sounds like your son is a happy camper with your art work too. Now, you’re probably working on another room, right? Thanks for the ideas!

The color meshing technique gives it a wallpaper feel, but I’m guessing it is less labor intensive than wallpaper, which can be a pain to remove.

Yes, Melinda, it does give a totally different look than just regular painting technique. Unless you are just totally in love with wallpaper, I wouldn’t suggest trying to do the whole room-although some people will. I usually do maybe one wall with wallpaper, just as an accent wall.

But as I say, to each their own. The amount of work you put into your home is completely your choice. If it makes you happy, then go for it.
