What’s the easiest and least expensive way to give your room or house a great new look? The best solution by far, give it a fresh coat of paint. Paint colors that are in style today are a lot different from 20 years ago and will be a lot different 20 years from now. The sky is the limit when it comes to paint colors. What color you choose all depends on you.
The Color Wheel
Most of us have learned about the color wheel, either in school or just doing research. While the color wheel remains to be true to its use, there are so many variations that you may not have much use for it. Home paint color ideas are all about you.
Do you like the bold colors such as red or blue? Do you prefer the more soft colors such as pink or yellow? Or maybe you like the more neutral paint colors. Whatever your choice, it’s YOUR choice.
Three Color Types
There are three primary colors in the painting world: red, blue, and yellow. These are said to be primary because you cannot mix two colors together to produce any of these three colors.
Secondary colors are created when you mix two primary colors together. If you mix blue and red, you get purple or yellow and blue, you get green-I’m sure you get the idea.
Three pirmary colors are mixed together to create tertiary colors. They consist of brown and gray. Brown or gray colors can also be created by mixing a primary color and a secondary color-which is basically made from two primary colors.
Warm Or Cool Colors?
The range of warm colors is from yellow to red-violet which also includes all the colors in between like red, red-orange, orange, yellow orange. These colors are often associated with excitment, energy, and passion. Warm colors are used to grab your attention. So what room do you use warm colors-any room you choose. However, these colors are used mainly in common spaces such as dining rooms.
On the opposite side of the spectrum are the cool colors. These include yellow-green, green, green-blue, blue, blue-violet, and violet. Cool colors are said to be calm and relaxing. These are more associated with bathrooms or bedrooms, but you can use them in common spaces also. Any variation of these colors are still considered in that category. For example, if you have a bedroom painted in cobalt blue, that’s still said to be a cool color.
Each color has a complementary color. These colors are said to look best when they are matched together. But, again, don’t be afraid to try different things. You can mix and match each color however you like according to your style and preference. Each cool color has a complementary warm color and visa versa. I have listed them below.
red-violet/yellow-green, violet/yellow, blue-violet/yellow-orange, blue/orange, blue-green/red-orange, green/red
Be True To Your Color
You can even use different tones of the same color which is called monochromatic. For example, you can use true green and complement it with mint green or forest green.
You may want to consider what is associated with some colors when choosing what mood you are trying to set by those colors. Each color is associated with a particular mood. Here are some:
red: royalty, passion, elegance
blue: formal, professional, coolness
yellow: energy, cheerful, youthful
purple: rich or romantic
green: fresh, natural, earthy
orange: warm, cozy, inviting
white: innocence, purity, goodness
black: power, formality, elegance
The truth: home paint color ideas are just that-ideas. You have to make them come to life in your home. Always pick the colors that will speak to you personally. The great thing is, if you don’t like it, you can always paint it again. I painted my living room three times before I was satisfied with the end result. While it is true that certain colors are said to compliment each other, don’t be afraid to try different things. So, what is your color?
